Will You Continue to Be Crazy Busy in 2024?

Ever felt like life is a non-stop rollercoaster, with work, family, and everything in between? We get it.

Let’s talk about leaders for a moment. They’re often caught in a whirlwind of being Crazy Busy with their never-ending tasks, constant pressure to keep everything on track, leading their teams and being responsible not only for themselves but many others too.

Now, here’s the thing: a crazy-busy lifestyle isn’t sustainable, whether you’re a leader or not. It’s like trying to run a marathon without ever catching your breath. The more we push ourselves out of balance, the more we risk burning out.

So, here’s a little reminder: Life isn’t just about keeping up with the chaos. It’s about finding moments to breathe, reflect, and connect with what truly matters. Whether you’re a leader steering a team or someone navigating the challenges of everyday life, there’s more to success than constantly being on the go.

We need to rethink the idea that busyness equals success. Instead, let’s aim for a life that’s not just about surviving but thriving.

Inside the Mind of an Expert: Unveiling the Secrets of Busyness with Thijs Launspach

What are actions leaders unknowingly take that add stress to their teams in an already stressful environment?

“While their intentions may be good, leaders often do emphasize the importance putting hard work and performance above everything else. Of course, there’s nothing wrong about working hard and getting results. However, mythologizing hard work above all else – while doing damage to the team members’ health – sometimes makes for a toxic productivity mindset. Toxic productivity can be an individual thing, or part of company culture. I’d say that getting emails at ten in the evening, putting in hours of overwork and showing up for work exhausted but stressed to make a certain strict deadline are all examples of toxic work behavior. Unhealthy work behavior should be challenged, not rewarded. Instead, do let people have mental health days, and instruct them to take their stress alarm signs very seriously. Getting results should be a long term thing – if your team aims for all the short term goals while damaging themselves in the process, well, that’s just bad business, isn’t it?”

What stressors do leaders impose on themselves without realizing, contributing to their busyness?

“I think leaders often deal with enormous feelings of responsibility. It’s what got them there! However, trying to be in control of things you’re not in control of is a good way of getting stressed. Instead, try to control the process, not the results. And I do think that leaders have a role to play in promoting healthy work habits. So no e-mail after hours, no skipping lunch to ‘make that one deadline’, no pushing themselves beyond what is healthy or sensible – they should lead by example!”
