Tips to Practice Pace

Tip #1

Punctuation – Mark pauses in your notes:

Use slashes (/) or symbols to indicate where to pause in your written speech or presentation.

Tip #2

Emotion – Use personal stories:

Practice telling a personal anecdote. Insert a pause before the climax or emotional punchline to let the moment resonate.

Choose a paragraph from a speech or story, identify parts to speed up or slow down, and rehearse delivering them with varied pace.

Tip #3

Reflection – Ask reflective questions:

In your speech, include open-ended questions and pause afterward, giving your audience time to think.

Tip #4

Filler Killer – Use the “pause before answer” technique:

In conversations, intentionally pause for a second before answering to build the habit of thinking before speaking.

Tip #5

Expectation – Build suspense in storytelling:

Practice telling a short story and add a pause before revealing critical twists or outcomes.

Tip #6

Condition – Deep breathing drills:

Inhale deeply during planned pauses while rehearsing to regulate your pace and reduce anxiety.

Tip #7

Tempo – Ask reflective questions:
